A Black Lady COLORS Show
Live performance is without a doubt the best way to experience music. But, it isn’t always an option, so pre-recorded sets are the next best thing.
One such platform is found at COLORS Studios. Based in Germany, the COLORS concept is fairly simple: artists come and perform in a room painted wall to wall in a color that complements the musician’s aesthetic, sound, or both. Artists of varying genres, nationalities and languages give phenomenal performances on this stage—including Black women across every spectrum.
Here are some of the Black women who have graced the COLORS stage in colors across the rainbow.
Ray Blk - My Hood
The color is LOVE. Dressed in jeans embroidered with hearts, London artist Ray Blk speaks of her love for home in this rendition of “My Hood.” Fittingly, the room glows with the blush pink that covers the wall, contrasting well with the shades of red and pink throughout Ray’s outfit. Evoking the most sincere love in all of us, there truly is no place like home.
Ravyn Lenae - Sticky
Ravyn Lenae proves she doesn’t need distortion to achieve all those funky vocal inflections during her time on the COLORS stage. Ravyn performs “Sticky” with the same slick, intergalactic groove as the original, adding some extra flair this time around. Sticking with the color palette of her latest EP, the room is bathed in a scarlet that matches Ravyn’s fiery mane and paints the sonic landscape of her warm voice.
Little Simz - Venom
I don’t know what’s more impressive—how perfectly sinister this stage looks or the fact that Little Simz never stopped to breath even once. She performs her track “Venom” ferociously and flawlessly for her second round on the COLORS stage, topping the intensity of her studio recording and spitting pure venom in each perfectly articulated bar.
H.E.R. - Carried Away
Seeing the color blue and listening to R&B often evoke the same kind of steady tranquility for me. H.E.R.’s COLORS show displays everything in a shade of blue, from the walls to her oversized blue sunnies. H.E.R. creates a peaceful vibe with her performance of “Carried Away” while still showcasing the power and range of her voice. The only thing that would’ve made this better is if she swapped her air guitar for the real thing.
Tierra Whack - Unemployed
I’ll be honest, I know more about Tierra Whack’s idiosyncratic fashion sense than her music. Regardless, she showcases her indisputable talent on both fronts in her COLORS performance of “Unemployed.” Tierra raps gleefully in front of an equally as bright tangerine orange background in an orange pant and turtleneck combo. The entire look is pulled together by a (holey?) blue jacket and a blue stage platform. We could all only hope to wear orange this well and spit bars this effortlessly.
