Black Celebrities Whose Style Dominated The 2010's
Oh what a decade the 2010s were...
They brought us from the low-rise fad of the 2000s to whatever trends the 2020s might hail. The 2010s saw the ‘naked trend,’ with everything from see-through heels to mesh top and dresses. We saw mon jeans, fanny packs….. the best (and worst) of athleisure.
Now that we are in the 2020s it will serve us well to reflect on our fashion successes and faux pas of the 2010s. But let’s keep it real… if we’re going enter the 2020s with a fassion sense even better than that of last decade, we have to look to those who have been doing it well.
Take a walk with us down memory lane as we reflect on the Black women who reign as fashion icons of the 2010s:
Rihanna
Rihanna entered the 2010s as a singer and left as an activist, fashion/beauty mogul, and multi-millionaire. She has been a fashion goal for years all the while releasing hit songs back-to-back, but this decade certified her as an icon. In September 2017, she launched Fenty Beauty and thrilled Black girls everywhere, as they were finally able to find their perfect shade of foundation. Her lingerie line, Savage X Fenty, was founded in 2017, with fashion shows that stun and awe us with there diversity and uniqueness. And while we’re all hoping for new music, I’m all here for Rihanna’s fashion domination.
Beyoncé
Queen Bey spent another decade at the top running things (as she should). She’s a cultural icon whose impact is unmatched. Her flawless, fierce and fabulous style in music videos, award shows, red carpets and on Instagram have been internet-breaking. She had us all wanting that yellow dress from the “Hold Up” video and wishing for a hoodie so we could pretend to be apart of her Coachella performance; she’s already kicking off the new year right by being as stunning as ever in her appearance at the 2020 Golden Globes.
Zendaya
Zendaya spent the past decade growing from a teenager and coming into her own as of Hollywood's brightest stars. She also has the best switch up game! Pants suits, ballgowns or just in jeans and a t-shirt, she's fabulously daring while being timeless. And don’t even get me started on the hair versatility. What style hasn’t she tried, and killed. Constantly topping best-dressed lists, launching her own clothing line and having collaboration deals with Tommy Hilfiger and Lancôme, this 23 year is just getting started. I can’t wait to see what she does this next decade.
Naomi Campbell
Can you make a fashion list without Naomi Campbell? The supermodel has dominated for 3 decades, and it doesn't look like she has any plans of stopping. Now 49, Campbell spent the last decade walking the runway and appearing in ads for Versace, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, and Dolce & Gabbana just to name a few. In recognition of her long career and lasting impact, Campbell received the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA's ceremony in 2018. In 2019, she landed her first-ever beauty contract with NARS Cosmetics and ended the decade as the December cover model for Vogue Brasil.
Michelle Obama
Our forever first lady is always the definition of class and grace. For many brands and designers, Michelle Obama wearing your clothes means receiving automatic attention and selling out of whatever item she wore. While her white House looks were goals, the book tour took things to a whole ‘nother level. Maybe it was the pure joy on her face from her life returning to ‘normal’, but the former FLOTUS was perfection at every event for Becoming. The best of those looks had to be the Balenciaga thigh-high boots (pictured above).
Meghan Markle
Our Black princess (and yes I know she's technically she’s not a princess) has had a busy decade. As an actress, she made some fun, yet classy fashion decisions. Now going by the title of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, her style has remained poised, fashionable, and true to herself in the face of thinly veiled racism. The ‘Meghan Effect’ has lead to websites crashing for whatever she wears and her support of smaller and ethical brands has changed company fortunes.
Lupita Nyong’o
The Oscar-winning actress has been a red carpet favorite since her groundbreaking role in 12 Years a Slave. Lupita’s style has a royalness to it. This beautiful Black queen is classy and confident, strutting bold colors and her natural hair on red carpets, talk shows, and while winning award after award. We’ve never seen her look anything but flawless and her looks are always must-see and top of the best-dressed list.
