Chelsie Worthy: The Beauty Influencer We Should All Be Following

Chelsie Worthy: The Beauty Influencer We Should All Be Following

Black women are naturally gifted. Period, point, blank. However, they are perpetually underrated and underestimated in all facets of life. They are expected to go above and beyond, compared to their counterparts, in order to be recognized. Despite bringing new ideas to the table and being authentically themselves, they are constantly imitated and overshadowed by others who rely on mediocrity all the while achieving the bare bare minimum.

Meet Chelsie Worthy

You’ve probably seen her on your IG explore feed. Worthy is best known for her #TrapTutorial style, where she brings her beat face (makeup) to life with her bold animations, sharp editing skills and good taste in trap music.

Unlike many MUAs who hire editors to do the work, Worthy does it all by herself.

Her talent is undeniable, but it’s often slept on, and it sucks. Not trying to throw shade at anyone, but I’m tired of watching beauty “gurus” stare idly at the camera for 20 seconds with generic EDM music. Worthy knows how to keep her supporters on their toes, garnering more than 300,000 followers on Instagram. Between you and me, she deserves way more recognition and followers.

Chelsie did something that wasn’t previously done with this type of editing and that’s clearly a fact. Don’t believe me? Name one person who’s done this specific type of creative content before 2017? I’ll wait…

Now that you can see the work she’s doing and getting recognition, she seldomly gets credit like the majority of trendsetting Black women.

This past August, she posted a Hot Girl Summer tutorial with her signature flame illustrations, blinding highlighter, (oh, sis, I forgot to mention she sells highlighters for POC!) and funny interludes.

Two very well-known beauty influencers, Manny Mua and Patrick Starrr posted their own versions of #Traptutorials, which were frankly watered-down compared to Worthy’s editing. Manny even used the same song with similar flame animations.

Upset by the situation and the constant imitation, Worthy responded to both videos and expressed her frustration over being a Black content creator and beauty guru who was not being recognized for her talent.

Ultimately, Manny responded and gave Worthy credit (after claiming he’s never heard of her and was inspired by another influencer) while Patrick threw some classy shade her way. Despite her initial concern about being blackballed for influencer events, Worthy stood her ground and her supporters did not hesitate to put everyone in their place.

Since the situation, Worthy has not posted a new #Traptutorial, however, she has shared videos from supporters who have displayed their versions of the tutorials. I haven’t heard any updates, but I do hope she comes back around because we are already familiar with the know the Jackie Aina and the Alissa Ashley’s of the beauty industry, but it’s now time that we give Chelsie Worthy her shine. We need Black content creators like her to change the game. For now, I, along with her 372.9k followers will await her next move.

Worthy, you are a queen. We see out here, and we appreciate you. People may imitate you, but remember, it will never have the same level of love + talent. You brought something new and exciting to the beauty world, and you will get the recognition you deserve in due time.
