Take Your Lashes to Greater Lengths & Higher Heights with These Mascaras

Take Your Lashes to Greater Lengths & Higher Heights with These Mascaras

When someone asks me what the first feature I notice in a person is, I say the teeth, but right up there are the eyes. The eyes tell us so much about a person, and can sometimes be a dead giveaway when the rest of the body is trying so hard to play it cool. Eyes don’t have to sparkle and be different colors to show us a range of beautiful emotions and feelings. That being the case, I personally like my eyes to be as delightful to look at as possible, as often as possible.

But as every woman can attest to, doing a whole eyeshadow look - blended and smoked out to perfection - is a chore and very time consuming. I personally am not a morning person, and like to wait until the very last minute to wake up. Even then, I have a three-year old to get ready for school. So getting myself done up has to be completed in a matter of seconds. We’ve already talked about a few of my go-to products for my sixty second face (blush, lip gloss), and mascara is my quick go-to for the yes. With my lashes lengthened and fluttering, I feel like I can at least look at someone eye-to-eye and not only be taken seriously, but also distract them from the bags and darkness under them. Sometimes without makeup we look tired, or worse, like a baby. A few coats of mascara might be all you need to turn your presentation around.

With so many mascaras on the market professing to do what would seemingly be the same thing, which one should we choose? What should we consider? There are definitely a lot of options and qualities that a great mascara should have, but then too, some optional benefits that you yourself may want for your unique set of lashes. Let’s consider all of these briefly.

DEPTH

Whether or not your hair or even your eyebrows are black, eyelashes often look best as dark as possible. The dark color gives even the sparsest of lashes a thick appearance, and can blend with an eyeliner of the same depth. Mascara comes in many colors, and if it’s your prerogative to experiment, I say go for it. I love a dark blue mascara. But for day to day, I always get the darkest color in a mascara range. One of my favorite dark mascara is the L’oreal Voluminous Feline Noir, in Blackest Noir ($9)

VOLUME

In addition to giving the appearance of volume by color, we can also do so by adding our lashes actual volume! I like to layer my favorite mascaras over and over until they’re borderline clumpy. That may not be your technique, but there are mascaras on the market that even with one or two swipes, the formula is weighty enough to make your lashes thiicccc thiqqqq! A thick lash is great because it makes your lashes visible, even from afar, and when paired with a nice thick eyeliner, your lashes could compete with those of Betty Boop! As a note, when trying newer mascaras, volumizing mascara will often have a very thick brush, similar to the one pictured. Some of my favorite volumizing mascaras are Too Faced Better Than Sex ($25), Loreal Lash Paradise ($10), and Stila HUGE Extreme Lash ($23).

LENGTH

Almost every woman I know wants her mascara to lengthen more than anything. If you are one of those privileged people with naturally long lashes and dont need that factor - good for you - but most of us do. While mascara isn’t a miracle worker, a number of layers of the right formula, can help even the nubbiest of nubs and the curliest of qs to straighten out and give you something to flutter and bat a few times. A lengthening mascara is often a little less thick, and has a thinner brush with more defined bristles to really help both separate and heighten your lashes. Some great mascaras that do this with ease are the Body Shop Super Volume ($15), Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real ($25), MAC Extended Play Gigablack ($20).

There are many other great mascaras out there are great at curling straight lashes, separating and widening lashes, and more. For starters, I’d recommend experimenting with drugstore mascara ranges, like L'oreal Voluminous (who has an array of different formulas), to see what you enjoy. Thereafter, experiment with your favorite mascara element in higher end products.
