2020 Golden Globes TV Nominees: Top Shows To Watch
It may only be the first week of the New Year, but the buzz and anticipation for Entertainment fans have already reached a breaking point, with the 77th Golden Globe Awards having just aired, marking the beginning of Awards season. Marriage Story, Joker, and The Crown are just a couple of the big names with nominations this year and film and television critics are flocking to voice their opinion on who will win, who shouldn't have even been contenders and the annual list of snubs.
As we write this article, we do not have the list of winners and we're not rushing to add to the already lengthy list of speculations.
But, after studying the list of Golden Globes nominees, what we have done is compile a shortlist of the most standout nominations for TV to stream as we transition back into the swing of things, this New Year!
Fleabag - available on BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime (3 nominations, 1 win)
As a Brit, there is some bias here, but it has to be said Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag is universally hilarious. The show follows Waller-Bridges character ‘Fleabag’ as she navigates life after the loss of her friend, her complicated family relationships and her appetite for sex.
When the 1st season aired back in 2016, it's fair to say the whole country was hooked. This comedy-drama series that started of as Waller-Bridges own one-woman play, went on to take the international market by storm and has seen many viewers participating with the intimate conversations with ‘Fleabag’ and rolling at the dry bitter wit of Waller-Bridges character. The second and final series was just as good and having aired only last year, and both seasons comprising of only 12 episodes, there is still time to stream both seasons and participate in the Phoebe Waller-Bridge fan club.
Dead to Me - Netflix (1 nomination)
It's about time Dead to Me saw some serious attention, making up just 1 of Netflix’s 34 nominations this year, this beautifully done series, tackles grief, friendship, love and secrets in a very original and entertaining way.
Arguably one of the best series Netflix put out in 2019, this is a must-watch for people with a dark sense of humour and fans of major plot twists. Just when you think you know what's going on, the next episode happily reminds you that you really don’t. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini both delivered wonderful performances and created two loveable and vulnerable yet frightening characters.
Stream on Netflix now before the new season airs (date pending).
Living with Yourself - Netflix (1 nomination)
Two Paul Rudd’s? What more could you want? Living with yourself, airing late last year, answers the age-old question ‘What would it be like if there were two of you’. After feeling stifled in his life and beginning to lose his wife, Miles (Rudd) sets out to find the reset/life improvement button we’ve all been searching for. This it turns out is in a cloning service that goes wrong. All 8 episodes of creator Timothy Greenberg’s comedy-drama, are hilarious but also significant in shining their light on the ways in which we lose ourselves allow relationships to go stale and give up on our passions and careers.
What do you do when the better man is you?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Amazon (2 nominations)
Last but not least, Amazon’s hit ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’. This 1950’s comedy, is the only period series were watching this year (sorry The Crown). Follow ‘Midge’ Maisel’s journey from prim and proper housewife to riotous stand up comic. The dreamy pastel aesthetics and costumes of the show alone are enough to make anyone tune in. I won't lie, I was a bit late to the party, a series about a woman comedian in the 1950’s doesn't exactly scream ‘Hey black woman this is for you’, but the show turned out to be an addictive and hilarious display of the power of women. Stream all 3 seasons on Amazon Prime.
