Cuz I Love You: A Lizzo Appreciation Piece

Cuz I Love You: A Lizzo Appreciation Piece

She’s 100% that bitch.

By now, unless you’re truly living in a remote location (and under a rock) you know her name. If you’ve yet to see her perform live (she’s currently on tour) in your city you need to look no further than the recent 2019 MTV VMA’s.

What other artist do you know who’s managed to rock a giant inflatable booty, get the ENTIRE crowd on their feet (singing word for word) AND give us all the confidence boost we didn’t even know we needed? We truly don’t even deserve Lizzo. And as of this writing (September 23rd, 2019) she’s made history for holding the longest running Billboard #1 single by a female rapper. So in honor of this musical gem, a true Goddess among us.

Let’s reflect on five reasons why Lizzo deserves all the accolades she’s basking in.

1. She’s waited for this moment literally for YEARS:

Most of us have just heard “Truth Hurts” for the first time this year but the song was actually written, produced and released in 2017. Unfortunately, the song then fell flat and in an interview with Billboard magazine Lizzo noted it was her “darkest day.” Fast forward to 2019 and with the help of a social media #DNAChallenge going viral, our girl is now reaping the benefits of putting in hard work, persistence, consistent top-notch twerking and patience. It’s a true testament to never giving up on what you know you’re destined for.

2. She’s a major self love advocate:

Her most well-known songs are self love anthems ( such as Good As Hell and Like A Girl ) and that’s intentional. Even just a casual perusal of the rapper/singer’s social media will convey how serious she is about promoting self confidence.

And that doesn’t even include the hilarity that ensues. You’ll definitely find a multitude of her now signature “Bye Bitch” videos:

3. Sis, plays the flute. THE FLUTE!

If the powerhouse vocals and dance moves weren’t enough, Lizzo is also an instrumentalist! Here’s a snippet of Lizzo playing here beloved flute (named Sasha) alongside our forever fave Meg The Stallion.

4. She’s your favorite’s favorite.

Beyonce. Jay Z. Sam Smith. Jada Pinkett Smith. Nicki Minaj. Shawn Mendes Janelle Monae. Missy. Justin Timberlake. Cardi B. Most of music’s elite have publicly shared the love for Lizzo and the list goes on. Even Rihanna is just as obsessed as we are:

And nothing beats support from the LEGEND that is/was Prince:

5. We’ve needed her for a while now.

Let’s be real. The music scene has long been filled with a plethora of damaging lyrics and visuals, particularly against Black women. There certainly is no lack of such lyricism and the artists who continually create them. No shade to them, but we’ve needed a rebirth. We need an artist that reminds us that we are more than enough and f*** the rest. With her unapologetic personality, unwavering body positivity and empowering repertoire, Lizzo embodies that and more with a “bye bitch” on top. I don’t think we could ask for a better breathe of fresh air.
